The state of Missouri has restrictions on what can be reported in a background screening report beyond what the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) dictates.

Ban the Box: Kansas CityUPDATE - The following also applies to private employers, employing 6 or more employees: The City Council of Kansas City Missouri passed further restrictions to questions regarding the criminal history of applicants. Effective June 1, 2018, employers with six or more employee may not inquire about an applicant’s criminal history until it is determined the individual is otherwise qualified for the applied for the position, plus after the applicant has been interviewed for that position.

Notable Exceptions: The ordinance does not apply to employers required to screen for criminal convictions per local, state, or federal laws or regs.
Key Municipal Employment Restriction on Private EmployersThe Columbia City council passed a fair chance ordinance that prohibits employers from inquiring into an applicant’s criminal history until after a conditional offer of employment is made.
